They were filled with specific instances when I did or said something that positively impacted them. I still have that book because their gratitude was one of the fruchtwein memorable gifts Ive ever received. - Dave Nevogt, Hubstaff.com2. Do Something for OthersTwo years ago we had an employee who decided he wasnt giving anyone at work a gift. Instead, he went out and purchased gifts for a family in need. He purchased everything and took several of us from work to deliver the gifts. The joy this brought us was intense. Since then weve encouraged our team to give to others during this time of need. - John Rampton, Due3. Show Your Continued DedicationThe memorable moments are often the most simple. So often we hear about how people just simply seem to slow down during the holiday season and take a little winter break. Employees who continue working through the holidays and dont treat it as a mini-vacation are always appreciated. They allow me to realize the value in my team. - Matt Doyle, Excel Builders4. Buy Unique GiftsI hired a programmer four years ago who had just arrived in Miami from Cuba. After a year of working together, he went bac k to visit his family during the holidays and came back with a box of Cohiba Cigars and a bottle of Havana Club Dark Rum. - Duran Inci, Optimum75. Get CreativeAt our annual end-of-the-year holiday party, one of our employees wrote and performed a rap in front of about 80 to 90 other staff members. Cook for Your TeamWeve had teammates cook meals for the team and bring them to the office as a surprise. Its a gift that everyone appreciates, particularly when the food is inspired by the taste preferences of fellow colleagues. - Nanxi Liu, Enplug7. Just something that mentions a small detail he or she picked up on or an exchange that we had sounds simple- but its truly appreciated. - Peter Sena, Digital Surge ons8. Plan Something SpecialI was shocked one year when the employees got together to collect money and gifted me with a paid vacation Knowing how hard I work, they knew I needed time off to relax and wind down, and planned a lovely weekend getaway for me. It was a wonderful and touching gift, one I will never forget - Marcela DeVivo, National Debt Relief9. Offer to Help in Unexpected WaysSometimes my holiday shopping is put on the back burner due to my long hours in the office. My teams helped me with Christmas shopping and gift wrapping to help lessen the stress that comes with this season. What seems like a small favor to them means a great deal to me. Their help allows me to finish my work so I can truly enjoy the holidays with my family, and I am very thankful for that. - Leila Lewis, Be Inspired PR10. Decorate the OfficeI was very surprised one morning to walk into the office and it was completely decorated with Christmas decorations that matched our company colors. I was ve ry impressed with the team, as most days Im the first one in and the last one out. Broadcast Your ThankfulnessI vividly remember a number of toasts or speeches employees of all different rankings have made during our holiday parties over the years. How sharing credit can boost your career and company

How sharing credit can boost your career and companyHow sharing credit can boost your career and companyNot long ago, I bought a geschftlicher umgang subscription that required a bit of training to learn. The account manager who walked me through the product on the phone did a phenomenal job. So good, in fact, that I wished otherbeis on my team had been around to see how she went above and beyond on the call.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThis was the kind of person I would have loved to hire. On a whim, I decided to send her boss an email telling him as much. She embodied the two attributes I screen for when hiring formy companyOWN ITBE A GIVERHer boss thanked me for the feedback. The next time I interacted with the account manager, it was clear that the praise had filtered down to her as well. I now had an advocate for life, and she had gotten well-deserved credit in front of her boss and peers.Screening for problem solvers and givers has helped us build an office full of 80-some-odd obnoxiously kind people. But the real lesson I learned from this account manager is that being a giver- and specifically giving credit- isnt just good for building a happy company its also one of the easiest ways we can battle inequality.Researchindicatesthat women often tend to take less credit for their achievements than they deserve (typically a sign of a giver), and men are more likely to toot their horn (typically a good strategy for climbing the ladder). It turns out that we often do these things unconsciously. What results, however, is a world where women earn less, get fewer promotions, and have more of their ideas ignored. This is bad for society, of course, and its bad for business on two levelsInnovation happens when we look at problems from different perspectives.Gender inequality robs us of valuable perspective at every level of a business (andthorough researchba cks this up). When women succeed more at work, men succeed more, too. Inequality pulls everyone down.Im going to be honest when I talk about inequality, I get self-conscious. Decades of studies show that I have things easier at work, on balance than my female and minority colleagues. I- and doubtless other capable people in my shoes- often dont think about this because Im focusing on my own work. But focusing on myself and the wayIfeel is shooting myself in the foot. Aside from being the ethical thing to do, it turns out that its in my own interest to speak up about workplace inequality.Recent studies show, unambiguously, that by helping others succeed, we make our own jobs easier. And research also shows that companies with successful womenmake more progressand more profitthan homogenous teams. In other words, everyone benefits from leaning in, not just women.I hadnt realized when I sent that note to my account managers boss that the woman whod done such a fantastic job was less likely to receive full credit in the workplace than a man doing a similar job. I sent the compliment because I was in a good mood. Now I realize that these simple acts of giving credit to people- to their bosses and peers- are part of how I can help end workplace inequality. We have plenty of habits to change when it comes to gender and work. One of the easiest ways for men and women to get started- toleanintogether- is to give generous credit to our colleagues. We all need to build each other up and let others see our collective good work. As we look for ways to do this, well build work cultures filled with obnoxiously kind people. Well build the kind of business world where powerful women lead and are heard. And we just might get more work done, too. This article first appeared on Linkedin.Shane Snow is the bestselling author of Dream Teams and a global keynote speaker on innovation, teamwork, and human behavior.

Bringing Engineering to Elementary

Bringing Engineering to Elementary Bringing Engineering to Elementary Engineers want kids engineering. So there are many opportunities for teachers of children that fall in the K-12 category to bring the subject into the classroom. But the kids that ultimately are exposed to behauptung new curriculums tend to be urban and fluent speakers of the English language. Now, Bostons Museum of Science is offering up a little money to balance the availability of engineering for the elementary school. Theyve created $200,000 worth of scholarships for teachers in rural schools with kids who dont speak English as their first language. Selected teachers will attend workshops on teaching the Engineering is Elementary curriculum, developed by the museums National Center for Technological Literacy, so they can implement it in their classrooms. Since 2004, the center has been spreading the gospel of teaching engineering early on. Theyve received many grants to do just that, but the money tends to come from corporations. Its philanthropy, but bedrngnis surprisingly, the vast majority of companies are urban, occasionally suburban, says Christine Cunningham, founder and director of Engineering is Elementary. So when they give things for scholarships, it tends to be for those regions. But we have children in rural areas that dont have that access.Children are fascinated with building things-and with taking things apart to see how they work. Image Engineering is ElementaryThe application for the scholarship includes information about the teachers backgrounds and the demographics of their schools. But more important are the questions that look into the teachers motivation and dedication. We want to make sure that folks that are applying are committed to doing this, says Cunningham. Its going to take some effort its not going to be totally smooth sailing. To be sure the potential teachers can navigate those potentially rocky seas, EiE asks for a letter of support from the teachers admini strator. To be really successful in a school requires knowledge from the administration that youre trying something new, and hopefully support, says Cunningham. If they walk by the classroom and it looks chaotic and loud and noisy, theyll understand what it is.Accepted applicants will attend a two-day workshop to learn how best to implement the curriculum. Participants are asked to do two things One is to think about the experience, as a learner, the experience of building a windmill, a pollinator, or a solar oven, then to think about the same activity as an educator, she says. The curriculum begins with a lesson called Technology in a Bag, where teachers introduce a bag filled with seemingly ordinary items a Post-it note, a paperclip, a spoon. The students are encouraged to look at each as a piece of technology and then to explain the purpose of each item, what it is designed to do, and what it is made out of. Students are eventually taught to approach any problem, no matter how sim ple or complex, with a five-step engineering process ask, imagine, plan, create, improve. Theyll bring these to each of the engineering projects they attack.Teachers needing additional information, guidance, or inspiration can turn to the more than 5,000 pages and hundreds of videos that EiE has put online. Teachers who have run the program have reported that students who might otherwise hang back in class become re-engaged. And they do better on the state tests.Particularly enthusiastic teachers, Cunningham hopes, will draw in additional educators. One thing teachers are very good at is talking to each other, she says. So if it works, it spreads throughout the district.Whether or not kids improve their test scores, become engineers, or even go into a STEM field, theyre likely to learn useful life skills. Its a way of looking at the world, of problem solving, of strategizing, says Cunningham. Whether theyre engineers, teachers, or naturalists, youve given them a set of skills that wi ll make them successful in life, not just engineering.Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further DiscussionWe want to make sure that folks that are applying are committed to doing this. Its going to take some effort, its not going to be totally smooth sailing.Christine Cunningham, Engineering is Elementary

How to Find the Right Life Coach

How to Find the Right Life Coach How to Find the Right Life CoachPosted November 16, 2018, by JennyThe right life coach can help you reach and even exceed your biggest dreams and goals Tony RobbinsWhat is a life coach and what do they do? These are questions that are circling the web. We want to address them for our readers and help them find the right life coachWelcome to the magical, mystical world of Life Coaches In this article, we take a look why you should get a life coach, how it works and how to find a life coach who is perfect for you. And if you are questioning will a life coach help me? then the answer is a definite yes if you find the right oneThe trouble with life coaches is that anybody can decide to be a life coach, but only some might be able to help you transform. This is because if a life coach doesnt have the appropriate skills, experience, strategies or contacts to help you, then they are clearly not going to be able to help you.If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want, copy what they do, and youll achieve the same results. Tony RobbinsBut how do you know what to look for so that you can find the right life coach for you? Here are a few things to consider...Decide what you want help withDo you have a specific goal, or situation that youd like to resolve or achieve? For example, you might want to improve your career, relationships, marriage or even your finances but you are happy in other areas in your life. Perhaps you feel that your whole life needs an overhaul, or you need somebody to talk to resolve issues from the past.Getting clear about why you want to hire a life coach is crucial in helping you find the right coach for you. Instead of hiring a general life coach you might decide that you need a marriage or relationship coach, or a career coach. To overhaul your life, you might take a look at a transformation coach or a holistic coach. With so many life coach categories to choose from, making th is decision beforehand will help you narrow down your choices so that you can abflug to track down that perfect coach.Think about how you like to be motivated or inspiredIf you are not comfortable with group sessions, or you find it difficult to commit to one class at the same time each week or even a challenge scenario which can often be used to motivate people, then you are not going to enjoy working with a coach who works in this way.If you know that change wont occur inside you if you just talk and dont have any homework to keep you focused. If you need access to a coach frequently to help you stay accountable for the tasks and habits you need to create change, then this is the type of coach and services that you need. Its important to consider this especially when you can access life coaches from all over the world via the internet. Most life coaches will offer group coaching or a coaching course that you can work through yourself as a way to make their services more accessible to those who cannot afford or apply the time or money to their coaching needs. If you are clear about how you like to work, then you can start to look for a coach who works in a similar way to your preferences.Decide on your budgetTo be successful you need to be ready to invest time, money, and emotion. Think about how much can you allocate to hiring a life coach, and how much time can you spare? Youll need to make time for your life coaching sessions and for the work that youll need to do to bring change into your life.So if you find a life coach who has a tailored fast-track programme where you attend two to three sessions per week for six weeks, and you dont have enough time, then its time to find a coach who can work with you to your schedule. Or make sure that you can realistically amend your schedule to fit it in.There are life coaches who offer package deals which might be a way to prevent you quitting, or running out of budget at a crucial moment, plus package deals are also usually cheaper than buying a session as you go. Finding a life coach who challenges and empowers you, takes attention and care, is worth the investment.Check out the skills and experience of the life coachIs the life coach you are exploring clear about what results they can achieve for you and why they can make such claims. There are two types of coaches to look forCoaches who are master practitioners or trainers in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), hypnosis, psychotherapy. The coaches who have already walked the walk that you want to take. If you want to snag a CEO role in your career find a former successful CEO who is now a coach or consultant to coach you.The ideal scenario here is a life coach who has the experience and still keeps their hand in on whatever it is they are coaching about professionally and has some of the transformational skills that are needed from a life coach. Its also worth finding out how your coach stays relevant and up to date. Do they take courses? Re ad books? Stay up to date with current material to do with their speciality? And do they invest in enhancing their coaching toolkit? Also, feel free to ask questions around how long theyve been coaching professionally, or even how many clients theyve worked with and of course, their success rate.Ideally, you want a coach who does all of the above and well, to be honest with you the best ones will (even if they dont have the flashiest websites and million dollar mansions to boast their success). How to deal with that bossy coworker who acts like your supervisor

How to deal with that bossy coworker who abroll-container-transport-system like your supervisorinHow to deal with that bossy coworker who acts like your supervisorKnow-it-all coworkers are one thing, but ones who act like theyre your actual manager (when theyre not) are a completely different beast. Heres how to keep them from controlling your workday.Dont run away - act with compassionThis isnt impossible. In this video, Kathi Elster and Katzu sichine Crowley of K Squared Enterprises answer someones question about a bossy secretary who thinks she runs the office, and what they can do in response. Its tempting to think that you can shut her down, and relieve her of her delusions. Come on, you cant do that. Anyone who gives themselves that kind of self-importance usually feels really shaky inside. So self-awareness is gonna come to this secretary when shes ready to grow. Your best bet is to feel sorry for her. Your compassion will ease her need to be so self-important. I know this is n ot what you wanted to hear, but your anger is only fueling her desire to act out.Say it to their faceSara McCord, a freelance writer and editor, writes about this in The Muse, recommending that you speak up in the moment. After talking about a hypothetical scenario where your colleague assumes control and gives you a boring assignment (and youre annoyed by it), and that she may not realize how you or others on the team feel, McCord explains about the best way to proceedSo, step one is speaking up. She may not realize how aggressiveHeres what were going to do sounds.Practice saying things like, I have an idea for a different approach and Id like to take a more active role in the direction of this project. How about if Maybe shell do a decent job at sharing leadership roles, its just that no one had previously expressed interest. Your first step is to give her a chance to do just that.Remember, they may not always have it out for youPeter Barron Stark is a coach, author, speaker cons ultant, co-creator of The Managers Toolkit and President of Peter Barron Stark Companies. He writes on the organizations website about experience coaching top managers with a difficult relationship, and that when working with difficult colleagues, you should assume positive intent. We dont think that people get up in the morning and say, Im going to be a real controlling, arrogant jerk today at work. We do believe that despite appearances, people try to do their best. Some people have baggage they cart with them. Some appear insensitive and are oblivious to the impact they have on others. Others seem to work in a world of their own and make decisions in a void. Accept people for who they are, and assume that they have positive intent, despite their approach. If you can look deeper and try to understand your counterparts perspectives, youll almost always realize that they are doing what they believe to be best. From there, it is easier to figure out ways to work collaboratively to achi eve common goals.Get your actual boss on boardLolly Daskal, speaker, consultant, coach, author and President and CEO of Lead From Within, writes in Inc. that you should seek additional support.Enlist the help of your supervisor or a human resources manager if your colleagues behavior is interfering with your work. Ask other coworkers who are frustrated with the control freak to support you if your manager resists taking action.

What it Takes to Land Healthcare Admin Jobs

What it Takes to Land Healthcare Admin JobsWhat it Takes to Land Healthcare Admin JobsThe healthcare industry is hot, hot, hot right now and it can be a great area of focus for administrative professionals. Learn what a recruiter in the healthcare sector has to say about making the move from traditional administrative roles to healthcare admin jobs. With strong job growth and rising salaries, its no wonder many administrative professionals are curious about what the administrative healthcare field has to offer. So, what does it take to land healthcare admin jobs?We spoke with Allan J. Gregory, vice president and healthcare practice manager for Central New Jersey with Robert Half (OfficeTeams parent company), to get answers to some of the fruchtwein common questions people have about working in the healthcare sector in administrative positions. Heres what he had to sayQ What advice would you give to an administrative professional looking to break into the healthcare industry? Allan I w ould strongly suggest the professional team with an experienced healthcare staffing agency, so the candidate can best utilize the recruiters relationships in the marketplace to secure potential interviews. Recruiters will be able to open doors for new healthcare industry professionals that otherwise would be difficult to open.Q Is previous healthcare experience often requested by clients?Allan Yes, in most cases it is. For traditional front desk medical office positions, the requirements will be less stringent than those required for coding positions, for example. There certainly will be cases in which a candidate with only a healthcare externship experience will be considered for the front desk, but not generally for a coding position.Q In what ways is the work different for administrative professionals in the healthcare sector than in more traditional business settings?Allan The healthcare administrative professional often will be tasked with learning and understanding the nuances of medical insurance. They will be asked to perform insurance verifications and pre-authorizations as part of their daily job duties. Also, healthcare administrative professionals will generally be asked to work on specialized medical software packages, such as Nextgen, eClinicalWorks and Medisoft, whereas traditional office employees will spend most of their computer time using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.Q How is it the same?Allan Professional demeanor, appearance, the ability to multitask and a customer tafelgeschirr orientation are of paramount importance in both healthcare and non-healthcare jobs.Q What qualities and skills do clients most commonly ask for in administrative healthcare candidates?Allan They want knowledge of EMR (electronic medical records) systems, the ability to handle a high volume of incoming patients and phone calls, and experience within the same specialty area (i.e., a cardiology practice will seek a candidate who has previously worked in a cardiology off ice).Check out our current listings for healthcare admin jobsADMINISTRATIVE HEALTHCARE JOB LISTINGSQ What type of education is sought after by employers?AllanFor the administrative healthcare professional, specialized healthcare administrative coursework is preferred, but not necessarily required. For those seeking medical coding positions, Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) are highly desired and valued.Q What positions are in greatest demand?Allan Medical receptionist, medical front desk coordinator and medical secretary, along with medical coders.Q What trends are you seeing in the healthcare industry that will affect hiring demand this year?Allan The ACA (Affordable Care Act) has given access to many individuals who may otherwise not have visited a doctors office or hospital. Due to this increase, healthcare administrative staff requirements have also increased, along with the workload that follows this increase in patient visits.Q What do yo u enjoy most about working with candidates and clients in the administrative healthcare field?Allan The administrative healthcare field is full of wonderful, caring individuals who have chosen this field to help and assist others. You will find the employees and managers tend to be friendly and welcoming. This post has been updated to reflect more current information.
